Services
Freight and Renewables
A destination for a growing number of ships from the Baltics, Scandinavia, the European Union and further afield, we offer streamlined services for unloading and storing cargoes, and play an increasingly prominent role in the renewable energy industry. Our onsite facilities and excellent road access mean we can accommodate heavy and wide loads.
Dry Cargoes
The Port is a major conduit for the import and export of dry bulk goods. Our main dry goods cargoes include imports of packaged timber from Scandinavia and the Baltics, which is then distributed throughout Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom. We are one of the main entry points for road salt for both Highland Council and the Trunk Roads’ Authority. We also handle import and export trade in round logs for onward shipment to manufacturers.
One of the main exports through the Port is Sterling Board, manufactured locally by Norbord and shipped across Europe and to Turkey.
We also handle the export of a wide range of agricultural products including animal feed, barley, rapeseed and potatoes along with salmon smolts for the aquaculture industry.
Liquid Cargoes
We are the major distribution centre for the North of Scotland for imported fuel oils – derv, heavy oil and aviation fuel – with significant volumes arriving each year. The fuel comes mainly from Immingham and is transferred to the Inverness Depot for onward transportation throughout the Highlands. We also handle the occasional import of fish oil.
Renewable Energy
As one of Scotland’s most sheltered natural deep-water harbours, the Port of Inverness is a natural choice for the renewable energy industry. We enjoy unrivalled accessibility to the Highlands and with our sheltered location offer almost guaranteed access irrespective of the weather.
As a result of our strategic geographical location, access from the Port to the surrounding hinterland could not be easier – a direct link via Stadium Drive to the Longman Roundabout on the A9 gives both north and south access.
The port provides renewable energy companies heavy load assembly and extensive storage areas immediately adjacent to the quayside. Our North Longman Quay has a dedicated heavy lift pad and the main entrance has been designed to accommodate turbine blades in excess of 50m. We have built up an enviable track record in this sector, having successfully handled components for the Corriemony, Rothes Extension, Berryburn, Clashindarroch, Corriegarth, Moy, Dumnaglass, Edintore and Hill of Glashyle wind farms. Our main attraction has been our open storage facilities which allow parts to be stored in a secure environment until ready to be shipped to the wind farm site, minimising the need for storage on the wind farm construction site.
In addition, a considerable tonnage of wood pellets is exported each year for use in heating large commercial buildings.
